What is a toolbox talk
The HSE define a toolbox talk as, “a short presentation to the workforce on a single aspect of health and safety.”
Toolbox talks are usually held before a working day and are hosted by either a supervisor or site H&S representative, with all site workers attending. They look to raise awareness around potential hazards on site and promote safe working practices in an informal way.
Toolbox talks are seen as a positive way to encourage a safety culture and create a safe space for H&S practices to be discussed amongst colleagues on site.
Importance of Toolbox Talks
Toolbox talks are great for increasing awareness about the real hazards that can affect workers physically and mentally when at work. They look to reinforce any safety training, regulations and laws the team should be abiding by. With briefings being held at the beginning of the day, it means workers kick off on a positive note, with health and safety being at the forefront of their mind.
Toolbox talks give site managers, H&S managers and supervisors peace of mind that everyone on site that day has been given the same essential safety information, encouraging workers to take an active role protecting both their own and others safety.
With morning toolbox talks, sites can benefit from a reduction in the frequency and severity of safety incidents.
