Just released: HSE Key figures for 2024/25

The HSE have released the latest Health and Safety statistics for the years 2024/2025, and generally, there is little positive change. For example, the number of musculoskeletal disorders and workplace injuries, have both remained relatively flat over the past decade, whereas workplace stress has increased over the past 5 years. One of the key positive points is that occupational lung disease has started to see a decline, and it is projected to continue declining to 2040.

Here are some of the key figures from this year’s report:

• 1.9 million working people suffering from a work-related illness - an increase of 11% from the HSE 2023/24 report.
• 964,000 workers suffering work-related stress, depression or anxiety – an increase of 22% from the HSE 2023/24 report.
• 511,000 workers suffering from a work-related musculoskeletal disorder – a decrease 6% from the HSE 2023/24 report.
• 11,000 lung disease deaths a decrease of 8% from the HSE 2023/24 report.
• 124 workers killed in work-related accidents a decrease of 10% from the HSE 2023/24 report.

This has resulted in 40.1 million working days lost due to work-related illness and workplace injury, which is an increase of 17% from last year.

Employers have a legal duty to provide a safe and healthy workplace, and it is essential that control measures are put in place to reduce or eliminate health risks altogether.

As occupational lung disease has a long latency period, it takes a while for positive changes to impact the statistics recorded, however over the past decade the HSE numbers have started showing a downward trend. This is evidence that implementing effective control measures, does decrease occupational ill-health.
