The risks associated with working in a confined space are plentiful, and sadly, there are a number of people killed or seriously injured at work in confined spaces each year in the UK; however with the correct planning, training and equipment workers can stay safe and healthy while operating in these high risk environments..

What is a confined space?

The Confined Space Regulation 1997 defines a confined space as "any place, including any chamber, tank, vat, silo, pit, trench, pipe, sewer, flue, well or other similar space in which, by virtue of its enclosed nature, there arises a reasonably foreseeable specified risk". If you are working in this environment, you are required by law to ensure that sufficient measures are put in place to protect the safety of workers.

What industries operate in a confined space?

Working in a confined space is required across a wide range of industries, including; ship building, the oil and gas industry, water treatment and sewage facilities, mining industries and construction activities that take place in tunnels, shafts and pits.
