The Risks of Cold Stress

What are the risk factors that contribute to cold stress?

Cold stress is caused by a significant reduction in skin temperature which reduces the body's core temperature so levels where it can cause harm. This could result in serious health problems, such as:

  • Dehydration
  • Frostbite
  • Uncontrollable shivering
  • Numbness
  • Immersion foot
  • Hypothermia

It's vital that site workers protect themselves appropriately when working during winter months.

Precautions include:

1) Warm protective clothing
2) Nourishing the body with warming food and drink
3) Taking regular breaks in a warm environment
