Protecting Workforce Health: Webinars on Health Surveillance and Psychosocial Risk

Industry Events
Jennie Armstrong and Stuart Mace

Workforce health and wellbeing are moving further up the construction industry's agenda, and two important topics are attracting particular attention: Health Surveillance and Psychosocial Risk Management.

With increasing awareness of occupational ill-health, developments in industry guidance and revisions underway to ISO 45001, employers have good reason to review their current practices.

After all, if an HSE inspector visited your site tomorrow, could you confidently demonstrate that you're taking the necessary steps to protect your workforce's physical and psychological health?

To help construction businesses understand their responsibilities and take practical action, RVT Group is partnering with Construction Health and Wellbeing Ltd to deliver two informative webinars this November and December.

Presented by occupational health and wellbeing specialists Jennie Armstrong and Stuart Mace, the sessions will explore what organisations should be doing, why it matters, and how to move beyond simply meeting minimum requirements.

Webinar 1: Don't Get Left Behind with ISO 45001 – How the JCOP Can Lead the Way

Thursday 26th November | 11:00 - 12:00

Presented by Stuart Mace, Construction Health and Wellbeing Ltd

When we think about workplace hazards, our attention often turns to physical risks. However, work-related stress, excessive demands, poor communication and other psychosocial hazards can also have a significant impact on workforce health.

The construction industry is increasingly recognising that managing psychological health requires the same proactive, preventative approach traditionally applied to physical safety.

Recent developments are helping to bring this issue into sharper focus.

In June 2026, the Construction Leadership Council published its Mental Health Joint Code of Practice (JCOP), providing organisations with a framework for creating healthier working environments.

Meanwhile, ISO 45001, the international standard for occupational health and safety management systems, is undergoing revision, drawing further attention to how organisations manage occupational health risks.

Together, these developments provide an opportunity for construction businesses to reassess their approach to psychosocial risk management.

What will Stuart's webinar cover?

Stuart will explore the relationship between psychosocial risk, the evolving ISO 45001 standard and the JCOP, helping attendees understand:

  • What psychosocial hazards are and how they can arise within construction environments.
  • Why psychological health deserves greater attention within occupational health and safety management.
  • What the emerging ISO 45001 changes could mean for organisations.
  • How the JCOP provides a practical framework to support better mental health management.
  • How businesses can begin integrating psychosocial risk management into existing health and safety practices.

The session is particularly relevant for business leaders, HSE professionals and anyone responsible for creating a healthier working environment.

Webinar 2: Health Surveillance – Are You Doing What You Need to Do?

Tuesday 8th December | 11:00 - 12:00

Presented by Jennie Armstrong, Construction Health and Wellbeing Ltd

Health surveillance is an essential part of protecting workers from occupational ill-health, but is your organisation doing everything it should?

Construction workers can face exposure to hazardous dust, noise, vibration and other occupational health risks. While effective control measures should always be the first line of defence, health surveillance provides an additional safeguard by helping to identify early signs of work-related ill-health.

Importantly, health surveillance isn't simply about arranging medical checks. It's about understanding which workers require surveillance, implementing an appropriate programme and using the findings to assess whether existing control measures are working. The HSE makes an important distinction between legally required health surveillance, general health screening and broader wellbeing initiatives. Understanding these differences is crucial for employers looking to fulfil their responsibilities.

What will Jennie's webinar cover?

Jennie will explore the practical considerations surrounding health surveillance, helping attendees better understand:

  • When health surveillance is legally required and which occupational hazards may trigger the need.
  • The difference between health surveillance, health monitoring and general health screening.
  • How to determine whether your current arrangements are appropriate.
  • The importance of acting on results and reviewing preventative controls.
  • What employers should be able to demonstrate when questioned about their health surveillance arrangements.

Whether you're reviewing an existing programme or unsure where to begin, this session will help you identify potential gaps and make informed decisions about protecting your workforce.

Working Together to Drive Positive Change

Both webinars reflect a shared commitment between RVT Group and Construction Health and Wellbeing to improve occupational health standards across the sector.

Alicia Parfitt, RVT Group, explains:

"We are delighted to be working with Jennie and Stuart to help people understand the importance of health surveillance and how to properly manage psychosocial risk. By embracing an upstream preventative mindset and a holistic focus on workforce wellbeing, organisations can proactively reduce occupational ill-health on site. RVT Group and Construction Health and Wellbeing are both members of the Health in Construction Leadership Group (HCLG) and are actively working together to drive positive change across the construction sector."
