Case Study Overview

Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is the largest hospital within NHS Grampian. The hospital has been undergoing an extensive programme of improvements and refurbishment. Although the work is focussed on Backlog Maintenance works such as asbestos removal and improvements to the overall fire strategy, NHS Grampian is taking every opportunity to improve facilities and services in the building at the same time.

Challenge

The Infection Prevention and Control team at the hospital were keen to ensure that patients, visitors, staff and sensitive equipment were protected during construction works. Robertson knew that the main concern would be dust, the hospital facility was remaining live, so it was essential that there was zero dust migration into sensitive environments. It was also important for Robertson to keep a sterling reputation to continue a great relationship with the client in view of securing future work.

Solution

RVT provided a Dustex® Quick Prop system to zone off work areas to avoid contamination of surrounding live areas. Workers were able to create a screen that was the exact length, height and shape they required, and it could be quickly moved around site as work progressed. RVT also provided multiple Dustex® Raptors. These lightweight HEPA filtration units have an airflow of 1000m3/hr and can easily be moved around site as work progresses.

When used together, the Dustex® Raptors and the Dustex® Quick Prop system enabled the contractor to create a negative pressure environment, fully controlling the direction of airflow in the work area, so that dust, fume and other contaminants could not migrate into the 'live' or 'sensitive' hospital environments.
