Project Overview

A local drinking water reservoir in Bromsgrove, a small town in the West Midlands, required upgrades after parts of the original structure started to deteriorate.

Stonbury, a renowned specialist contractor in the water industry, was enlisted to spearhead the restoration project. The damaged structure at the reservoir contained water that had been treated with chlorine, so a de-chlorination operation was required to treat the water before discharging it. The operation was a trial run, to ensure the de-chlorination process was a success for future Borehole Works, as part of the De-Commissioning Phase of the project.

Challenge

As the water contained chlorine, it became imperative to ensure that any dewatering operations conducted did not pose a threat to neighbouring water surfaces or local waterways, thereby safeguarding the local environment.

The need for pH correction water treatment was vital before discharging the water, in order to safeguard aquatic ecosystems, mitigate water toxicity risks, uphold regulatory standards, and maintain the ecological balance of surrounding water bodies.

In navigating these complexities, Stonbury turned to RVT’s expertise to deliver a dependable and regulatory-compliant de-chlorination treatment system.

Solution

Recognising the substantial reservoir flow, RVT engaged closely with the contractor to better understand and anticipate both contaminants and water flow volumes that would need to be treated.

Considering the 250m3/h water flow and the presence of chlorine, RVT proposed a tailored water treatment solution. This bespoke approach saw three EnviroHub TT10 Treatment Tanks alongside two EnviroHub TU02 Chemical Dosing Systems deployed to site to carefully dose sodium thiosulfate into the water on a meticulously calculated, flow-proportional basis. This strategy facilitated near complete removal of residual chlorine while maintaining optimal Dissolved Oxygen levels.

The implementation of this solution gave the site team peace of mind by ensuring Stonbury's compliance in-line with their environmental water discharge permit. RVT Group's bespoke water treatment solution enabled the water to be treated and discharged efficiently, allowing them to concentrate on the restoration project without undue environmental concern.
