Hazardous Dust Effectively Controlled During a Refurbishment Project at Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital

Project Overview

The Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital is located within the grounds of the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton on the south coast of England. It provides outpatient services, inpatient facilities, intensive care and a 24-hour emergency care service for children referred by GPs and other specialists. The audiology department at the hospital needed to undergo essential refurbishment works, and in order for works to be carried out safely in such a sensitive environment, a compliant hazard control solution needed to be installed to protect everyone within the vicinity.

Challenge

The hospital was remaining live while works took place, and the project was based next to corridors that would be in constant use by hospital staff and patients. It was vital that the abundance of dust created throughout the project would be captured at the source, so that dust could not migrate outside of the work area.

Solution

RVT performed a free site survey and installed a range of specialist dust control solutions. In the main corridor where the project was based, Dustex® Aire Guardian units were installed at the entrance and exit, which contained the work area.

Dustex® Raptor and Dustex® DustMaster Pro dust extraction units were installed to capture dust at the source, and to put the work area under a negative pressure. The negative air pressure, along with the work area being contained, created an airlock. This ensured that there was zero dust migration outside of the work area into surrounding environments.

A Monitex Area Dust Monitor was installed at a strategic point to monitor the effectiveness of the dust control solutions. It monitored particle emissions continuously and in real-time, giving the site team complete assurance that dust was not migrating outside of the work area.
