Heatwave News Article Air Conditioning to Hire

Another amber extreme heat warning has been issued across the UK. This comes only a month after a record-breaking heatwave was recorded in July, when we saw temperatures reaching 40 degrees.

Working in Extreme Temperatures

Working in extreme temperatures, albeit hot or cold, can lead to an increase in accidents and injuries. When the weather is extremely hot, your workforce may be at risk of;

  • Sunstroke
  • Sunburn
  • Heat exhaustion
  • Heat stress
  • Heat rash
  • Dehydration
  • Dizziness
  • Sickness
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle cramps
  • Loss of concentration

It is therefore essential that workers are provided with:

  • Good ventilation/ fresh supply of cool air
  • A shaded area or cool area
  • Extra breaks
  • Water/ cold drinks

So why is it so hot in the UK?

Climate scientists are warning that this is just the beginning of the volatile weather changes we are going to see across the UK (and the rest of the world), if we do not significantly reduce carbon emissions.

The International Energy Agency estimates that CO2 emissions from energy increased by 6% in 2021 to 36.3 billion tonnes, and the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) explained that we need to reduce that by 43% by 2030 in order to make a significant difference to climate change.

Contractors across the UK have pledged to reduce their carbon emissions, with many announcing new environmental policies, reduced carbon emission targets and investments into greener solutions.

Here at RVT, we aim to be carbon neutral by 2024 and achieve Net Zero by 2029. For more information on our environmental sustainability plans click here.
