Isocyanates are the leading cause of occupational Asthma in the UK, and if you already have Asthma, even the tiniest amount of Isocyanate exposure can trigger an attack. Furthermore, Isocyanates can cause skin irritation, eye inflammation, chest tightness, shortness of breath, coughing, and flu-like shivers.

Isocyanates are often used in paints, coatings, lacquers and finishes due to their durability and finish quality, however when sprayed, these substances release tiny Isocyanate mist particles that can reach dangerous concentration levels within minutes.

A new HSE report has found that exposure to Isocyanates is most prevalent in the vehicle repair business, and as such they will be conducting 1000 targeted inspections across the UK. Many skilled vehicle paint sprayers develop life-changing health issues due to exposure to Isocyanates, forcing them to leave the profession permanently.

Even if you are not working in the vehicle repair industry, your team could be coming into contact with Isocyanates through the use of paints, coatings, lacquers and finishes; as such, it is important for you to understand your legal obligations under COSHH. The regulation states that employers must prevent or control worker exposure to Isocyanates using effective control measures and safe working procedures. Employers must also verify these measures are working by arranging regular health surveillance. Businesses found to be breaching COSHH regulations may face improvement notices, prohibition notices, or prosecution leading to unlimited fines.
