Inadequate Fresh Air Supply Can Prove Fatal
The company received this hefty fine as it had breached Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, Regulation 3(1)(a) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and Regulation 5(1) of the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997.
The potential danger of inadequate fresh air supply can prove fatal, yet many companies have still not taken large enough steps to protect their personnel on-site.
Hazardous substances, such as fumes, dust and micro-organisms, can get into the body and cause irreparable damage in a number of different ways.
Lungs. The simple act of breathing can unwittingly prove deadly. Once the air has been inhaled (and all that exists within those air molecules) it travels down into the lungs. And since the lungs are closely linked to the circulatory system, these harmful substances can easily pass into the blood, and from there, into the major organs of the body.
Skin. Substances such as solvents, when not using the proper safety equipment, can pass through the skin into the blood, and from there, to every artery and organ of the body.
Mouth. Harmful dust particles that permeate the air in poorly ventilated spaces, can land on food and unsuspectingly be consumed. Again, hitting vital organs of the body.
But regardless of how the substance is transferred, these silent killers can go unnoticed for days, weeks and even years.
And what's significant, is it can be easily avoided with adequate ventilation and the right equipment.
The HSE is in the midst of raising awareness about the need to tackle health and safety issues across all industries, with their Helping Great Britain work well campaign.
Making companies aware of potential hazards, and providing help and support to ensure they meet health & safety standards – protecting them and their site personnel – is something RVT Group whole-heartedly advocates and has championed for years.
RVT Group works tirelessly to create effective solutions that control dust, fumes, stale air, noise and humidity in sensitive locations or critical situations, and works with companies to ensure they receive the right equipment for their needs.
